THE opening ceremony of the Ministry of Home Affairs and its departments under it Badminton Team Tournament 2016 was held yesterday at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Fire and Rescue Department in Old Airport Road, Berakas last night.
The guest-of-honour at the event Haji Mohd ‘Abdoh bin Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Salam, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs was introduced to the teams’ representatives and officiated the launch of the tournament with the customary first serve.
The brief but eventful rally between the guest-of-honour and a volunteer marked the start of the month-long competition.
The first match of the competition saw the Ministry of Home Affairs playing against the Labour Department in the men’s doubles.
The semifinals of the competition is slated for March 16 and the final also to be determined following the completion of the last four.

Ten teams split into two groups will vie for top honours played in a round robin format.
Group ‘A’ features Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department, Fire and Rescue Department, Department of National Immigration and Registration, Brunei Muara District Office, Belait District and Seria Office while Prisons Department, Ministry of Home Affairs, Temburong District Office, Tutong District Office and Labour Department complete Group ‘B’.
The tournament will be played every Monday to Wednesday commencing at 7.30pm until four teams who progress to the semifinals including group winners and first runners-up have been decided.
Both groups will see action corresponding to one game each on the same night to ensure the same amount of games once every session of play comes to a close.
The competition will come to a conclusion with the final after the winners of the semi-finalists have been announced.
