THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) organised simultaneous Khatam Al-Quran ceremonies across the country yesterday, as part of Brunei’s 32nd National Day celebrations.
In Brunei-Muara District, the Khatam Al-Quran ceremony was conducted at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Mosque, in Kampong Rimba.
The guest of honour at the event was Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.
Among the 1,196 participants were youths from the Institute of Higher Education, Institute of Brunei Technical Education, Brunei National Service Programme, the Youth Development Centre, the Mosque Youth Committee and the National Youth Musabaqah Tilawah Al-Quran.
The ceremony began with a mass recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah led by the guest of honour, which was followed with Al-Quran readings by students from the Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (ITQSHHB).

It then continued with a reading of the Takhtim Al-Quran, by the students of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA).
The Doa Khatam was recited by Muhd Assraffi bin Haji Ibrahim, a student from ITQSHHB, while PKBN trainees led recitations of the Dikir Marhaban.
The ceremony concluded with the recitation of ‘Doa Allah Peliharakan Sultan’, by Mohammad bin Bagol, the Mosque Affairs Officer.
The event hoped to encourage the participation of youths in religious activities and to enliven the spirit of the National Day celebration by holding beneficial activities especially the recitation of the Al-Quran in line with the aspiration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in creating a ‘Zikir Nation’.
The event was one of the projects organised by the members of the National Day Celebration Supreme Committee and was coordinated by the Department of Youth and Sports under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. This year is the third consecutive year the event was held.
Also in attendance during yesterday’s ceremony were Dato Paduka Dr Haji Affendy bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, the Permanent Secretary at the MCYS; and Haji Mohd Noor Jusmin bin Haji Abdul Samad, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the MCYS.
In the Belait District, the event was held at the Muhammad Jamalul Alam Mosque, involving 120 participants. Present as the guest of honour was Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, Deputy Minister of Education. Also present were Dr Haji Junaidi bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education and Dr Haji Azman bin Ahmad, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education.
In the Temburong District, 130 participants took part and held at RPN Kampong Rataie Mosque.
