ROAD users have been urged to not take risks that could endanger not only themselves but also other motorists.
The call was made by the Director of Land Transport, Dr Haji Supry bin Haji Ladi at a road safety briefing for residents of Kampong Lugu and the surrounding areas at the Sengkurong Community Hall yesterday.
The briefing sought to raise awareness on the significance of complying with traffic rules and regulations to prevent accidents.
Dr Haji Supry emphasised that the public need to change their attitude towards the road laws to ensure the safety for all while on the road.
Road users need to be always vigilant, responsible, disciplined and thoughtful, he added.
Inspector Muhd Fadhillah bin Haji Ibrahim, Head of Operation and Administration of the Traffic Control and Investigation Department (JSKLL) of Belait District, said that in 2014, a total of 24 road fatalities were recorded, while 42 people were seriously injured and 392 were slightly injured in road accidents.

He said that studies conducted by various government and non-government agencies across the globe found that the main cause of road accidents can be divided into three factors – human, vehicle and environmental.
He said that these three factors are interlinked factors when considering the cause of accidents.
He also shared several road safety tips such as regular vehicle check-up to ensure they are in a good condition and properly planning long road trips of more than two hours.
Drivers should also ensure that they are in good physical condition which means that they are not sleepy or under the influence of medication or other substances that may affect their compliance with the road rules and regulations.
