A DISCUSSION and mentoring programme for former prison inmates and their families was held yesterday at the Youth Centre in Bandar Seri Begawan.

The programme is part of a larger cooperation programme between the Counselling and Supervisory Services of the Prisons Department with the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB), Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Counselling and Careers Guidance Section under the Ministry of Education and the Department of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Yesterday’s discussion and mentoring programme was aimed at helping the former prison inmates or ‘Supervised Friends’ be reintegrated back into society.

In addition to a question and answer session, the programme also featured a career guidance and motivational session led by Haji Ali Yusri bin Abdul Ghafor, Head of Counselling Unit at the Counselling and Career Guidance Section under the Ministry of Education.

As the Prisons Department explained in a press release, “The programme involves providing information, motivation and guidance to the Supervised Friends and their families in dealing with current issues, particularly aspects related to family, entrepreneurship and employment.”

“The goal of this programme is to motivate them to be active in contributing to social harmony and to be independent and not completely rely on family and country.”
