THE Special Education Unit (SEU) has set up an ad-hoc committee called IKHLAS with the aim to help meet the educational needs of students with special needs that require specialised resources and learning aids.
Yesterday, IKHLAS presented donations to some 30 pre-schoolers with special needs from various government primary schools in the country. Present as the guest of honour who later presented the donation to the recipients was Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman.
In a welcoming address by Pengiran Sarimah binti Pengiran Haji Ahmad, Acting Head of Special Education in her capacity as the chairperson of the organising committee, highlighted that IKHLAS aimed to identify the needs of students with special needs, enlist support from corporate bodies and voluntary sector organisations to contribute specialised resources and provide training on the use of such resources.
“These objectives aim to overcome learning barriers as well as enhance students’ accessibility and independence in school.”

She added that of the 4,161 students with special needs currently attaining their education in several government primary and secondary schools in the country, 754 students have been identified as high-needs students that have been assisted with an Individual Educational Plan (IEP). From this number, 307 students who required specialised equipment have been assisted with laptops with assistive technology, wheelchairs, specialised learning table, walker, hearing aids, Braille machine, Structured Learning Approach (SLA), Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Dyslexia resources and many more.
These were acquired through funds raised during last year’s charity event ‘Fun for Funds’ organised by SEU in November 2015, as well as from substantial contributions from SEAMEO Voctech’s ‘The Colour Run’ and their Charity Golf Tournament in 2015.
Also present at the event was Deputy Minister of Education, Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar; permanent and deputy permanent secretaries; director general of education and director of SEAMEO Voctech.
