THIRTY-FIVE members from the Brunei Malay Teachers Association (PGGMB) have left for Bangkok to participate in the 31st Asean Council of Teachers (ACT) Convention. The conference will take place over two days, from October 2-4.

Leading the group was Haji Antin bin Ahad, the President of PGGMB; and the association’s deputy president, Pengiran Datin Paduka Hajah Mariam binti Pengiran Haji Matarsat.

The convention will carry the theme ‘Creative and Productive Role of Teachers for Asean Community’ which conveys the increasing need for educators to provide new approaches to learning; and with current knowledge on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) educational programmes.

The ACT Convention is set to address these challenges through discussion among the participants, who are representing educational institution and teachers’ organisations in ACT member countries.

The meeting’s principal objective is to provide understanding related to educational and cultural activities, in order to achieve the aspirations of an Asean community with high levels of literacy, education and life skills. It is an annual educational activity, which is alternately organised by teachers’ associations, within 10 Asean member countries.

The forum will also feature presentations of keynote papers and reports from member countries. The goal is to bring together innovative educators in the field of computing, to a common discussion.

Hajah Nor Zurina binti Haji Assim, the Principal of Penaga Primary School, will present a report titled: “Computing in Model Schools Project” (CiMS). Meanwhile, Dr Hajah Jamilah binti Haji Mohd Yusof, a former lecturer from Universiti Brunei Darussalam will present a paper at the Parallel Session, titled: “The Integration of ICT into Education System in Brunei Darussalam”. Both reports will evaluate the impact of ICT on teaching and learning, and its future role in education.

Thailand will host the convention, which is organised by The Teacher’s Council of Thailand. Officiating as guest of honour is Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, who will be presenting the Princess Maha Chakri Teachers Awards to eleven recipients.

This year’s convention is also held in honour of World Teacher’s Day, and will be attended by guests from all educational organisations within member countries, which include Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia and the Republic of Korea.
