ARDEX to test disaster management capacity, capability

|     Danial Norjidi     |

THE upcoming Asean Regional Disaster Emergency Response Simulation Exercise (ARDEX) is a significant event that presents Brunei with an opportunity to test its capacity and capability in responding to worst case scenarios.

A large-scale simulation exercise, ARDEX features the involvement of all Asean member countries, and is aimed at testing and evaluating mechanisms pertaining to emergency response and disaster management.

Speaking in an interview on the sidelines of the First Exercise Planning Team Meeting took place yesterday at the International Convention Centre in Berakas, Abdul Rahim bin Haji Ismail, Acting Director of the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), highlighted the significance of the upcoming exercise, saying that when ARDEX takes place in Brunei this October, it will generate both regional and international interest.

“It will be a showcasing of capabilities in terms of what you can bring into the country. For example, when you have a disaster you have your rescue teams and aircraft. So basically we’ll be seeing that kind of showcasing in terms of Asean capability and in terms of logistics as well, because we have logistics arrangements.”

He said that it is to showcase, for example, that if something was happening in Brunei, “we have our friends from Asean to support us. We have that arrangement within Asean.”
