IN CONJUNCTION with the 45th anniversary of the renaming of Bandar Brunei as Bandar Seri Begawan, the Municipal Department, Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), held yesterday a recitation of Surah Yaasiin and Tahlil ceremony for the late parents of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam – Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam and Al-Marhumah Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Bendahara Pengiran Anak Abdul Rahman – at the Royal Mausoleum in the capital.
Present on the occasion were Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman and Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof.
The ceremony which was attended by 150 people, began with a recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Faizal bin Janif@Rosli, Mosque Affairs Officer, followed by the recitation of Surah Yaasiin and Tahlil.
Also present were members of the Legislative Council; senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs; heads of department; officers and staff of the Municipal Department; Penghulus and village heads.
The ceremony commemorated the contributions of Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien in developing and modernising Brunei Darussalam, which included changing the name of Bandar Brunei to Bandar Seri Begawan on October 4, 1970.
