THE unique delicacies and cuisine of each country can connect people around the world and raise awareness on diverse cultures.

The importance of unique food in promoting the culture of a country was underscored by Chef Yoon-mi Choi, a well-known figure in Korea, during a cooking demonstration held at the Mabohai Shopping Complex yesterday.

Yoon-mi Choi has appeared in several Korean TV programmes such as KBS Live Today, KBS Ask Anything, KBS Life Good Studio and KBS Morning Wide.

In front of a 20-member crowd, Chef Choi showcased the two most popular Korean dishes – Japchae and Bulgogi.

Japchae is a popular dish made of sweet potato noodles and assorted vegetables, while Bulgogi is grilled marinated beef in sauce.

Previously, she demonstrated her cooking skills at Korea’s National Foundation Day on October 1, which was well-received.

Speaking to the Bulletin, she said, “Whenever I travel outside of Korea, I must try the food of the country that I am visiting. By doing so, I can really feel the difference in taste and culture.”

Touching on Brunei food, she said, “I went to the Gadong night market as well as Tarindak D’Seni Restaurant in Kota Batu, where I got to experience the different sorts of tastes and good food.”

Chef Choi explained that she is fond of Brunei because of its friendly people and clear blue sky, and that she would love to open a restaurant or conduct cooking lessons here.

The cooking demo was organised by Mabohai Shopping Complex, in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea.

The lively cooking demo also offered the audience a glimpse of Korean cooking traditions in the kitchen, which includes feeding with the hand.
