FUMIO Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, recently sent a letter of condolence to Pengiran Haji Yura Halim, the son of the late Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Setia Negara Pengiran (Dr) Haji Mohd Yusuf bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahim, a former chief minister and a former member of the Legislative Council.
The letter was presented by Noriko Iki, the Japanese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, acting on behalf of Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan.
The letter was in honour of Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Setia Negara Pengiran (Dr) Haji Mohd Yusuf’s role as Brunei Ambassador to Japan in 2001-2002, as well as his special relationship with the city of Hiroshima, which is the hometown of Foreign Minister Kishida.
Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Setia Negara Pengiran (Dr) Haji Mohd Yusuf was a student at Hiroshima University, when the first atomic bomb struck the city on August 6, 1945. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from his former alma mater in 2013, for his role in promoting peace and goodwill between Japan and Brunei Darussalam.
Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Setia Negara Pengiran (Dr) Haji Mohd Yusuf also received the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun from the Government of Japan, in 1985.
