A CERTIFICATE presentation was held for 144 Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) instructors yesterday, for successfully completing a recent Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET), at the IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus.
Various programs and technologies were utilised during the four-day workshop, including OneNote, SkyDrive, Web Applications, Skype, Yammer, Padlet and Office 365.
Also included was technology embedded in other tools such as translation, video editing and broadcast applications.
Dr Chin Wei Keh, the Director of IBTE, presented the certificates to the participants.
According to Ahmad Ikhmanuddin bin Haji Ali, an IBTE instructor from Nakhoda Ragam Campus, “The workshop focused on the use of technologies in our daily teaching practices. We learn that, by using technology, we can enhance the level of cooperation and communications with students, and also among IBTE instructors.”
He pointed out that one of the tools called ‘Padlet’, uses a website with live updates, which can be used for discussions between students and instructors on mobile phone, Ipad and laptops with Internet connection. The discussions can be stored and recapped when needed.

His fellow instructors, Yi and Jocelyn, also shared the same sentiment. Yi said, “One of the important tools that we learned to use was Padlet, where students, who are unable to express their academic concerns, can make use of the website as a platform for discussion, as well as solutions and ideas.”
Jocelyn added, “Students only use their IDs to post ideas and discussions on the website and carry out class discussions online through a secured link.”
On how Technical and Vocational Education and Training at IBTE can contribute to the country’s progress, Yi said, “Our programmes are industry- driven to cater to the needs of the industry, therefore our programmes are developed together with the stakeholders of each respective industry. What we teach in the programmes fits exactly what is needed by the industry. This has vastly helped to improve the chances of employability among graduates.”
Ahmad Ikhmanuddin said, “I believe that TVET is very important to the progress of the country. In addition to academia and theory, TVET gives a hands-on experience and knowledge in developing the students’ skills, which plays a vital role in the development of a nation.”
