“The Tiong Hwa community takes the opportunity every year to present His Majesty with a pesembah, talk to him and give continuing support to His Majesty’s Government,” he said.
Pakistan Muslim Chamber of Commerce President Abdul Rauf Khan, who has lived in the country since 1967 and is now a permanent resident, noted that the event is important to the Pakistani community in Brunei.
“I shall continue to be part of this event for as long as I am alive. I still attend, even though I need a cane to walk these days. When I am gone, and if Allah the Almighty wills it, my children and my grandchildren will continue the tradition. Daulat Kebawah Duli Tuan Patik!” he said.

Zefri Ariff, the Secretary-General of the Brunei Youth Council, told the Bulletin, “The Junjung Ziarah with His Majesty is a very significant event, as it conveys a favourable image of Brunei as a country, as well a positive image of His Majesty as a popular leader among the people. It is a platform for the people to interact and greet the monarch, as well as a chance for His Majesty to see the progress taking place among the various communities in Brunei, including youths.
“Another interesting aspect is the presence of all levels of society during informal events such as this – which is unique. I believe that it should be continued as it illustrates how loyal and respectful Bruneians are towards their sovereign, and how well the sovereign understands the situation of the Brunei people.”
