MUSLIMS are advised to verify and not fully trust any religious ‘fatwa’ (Islamic rules) from unverified sources spread via social media or chain messages on mobile messaging platforms as this may lead to religious deviation, an academic expert said during a symposium for the Knowledge Convention 2016 yesterday.
Dr Hajah Noor Hira binti Haji Noor Kaseh, Dean of the Syariah Faculty at Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB), was answering to a query from a member of the audiences who was concerned at the increasing number of ‘fatwa’ being spread on social media and messaging applications, and if the relevant authorities could monitor them.
Dr Hajah Noor Hira said all content of such messages must not be fully trusted as they may come from different sources and if an individual feels doubtful about the matter, they should refer to the religious authorities such as the State Mufti or the Ministry of Religious Affairs to get further clarification.
“It is best and safer to speak to the authorities so we can be clear on the fatwa,” she said.
