MUSLIMS should take advantage of the intelligence bestowed by Allah the Almighty to pursue research in the fields of science and technology.

Research and assessment should be in accordance with the values and laws of Islam to ensure all findings and scientific- and technology-based inventions do not deviate from the Syariah.

This was highlighted in the working paper ‘Syariah and Technology: Complementing the Ummah as a Khilafah’ delivered by Dr Hajah Noor Hira binti Haji Noor Kaseh, Dean of Syariah Faculty, Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB), at the Knowledge Convention 2016 on August 23.

She said Islamic Syariah was provided to safeguard the welfare of mankind. With commitment in implementing the teachings of Islam, peace, harmony and the Ummah’s safety will be protected. To achieve prosperity of mankind, there is a need to protect and maintain the five principles of Syariah, known as Maqasid al-Shariah, which is to protect religion, life, intellect, lineage and property, she said.

“By observing and maintaining these five basic things, one certainly can discipline themselves to Allah the Almighty and all His commandments and prohibitions, and maintain relationships within the community.

“In addition, Maqasid al-Shariah will able to stem the people from doing things that will compromise the five basic things,” she said.

Development and advancement in technology should be a catalyst to economic, political, educational, social, including religion progress, she said.

“The importance of technology is generally recognised by the entire Muslim community now.

“However the focus of the Islamic society towards technology shouldn’t separate them from moral values and Islamic teachings. Instead, Islamic Syariah and technology should be integrated harmoniously to complement each other.”
