THE Ministry of Education (MOE) celebrated the Ma’al Hijrah 1437 with a ceremony held yesterday at the Auditorium of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA). The event was organised by the Private Education Section and the International Affairs Unit of the Ministry of Education.
Present were former Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong; and the Minister of Health, Dato Paduka Dr Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi.
The event began with a recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah, led by Ustaz Haji Sammali bin Haji Adam, Head of the Communications Unit of UNISSA.
This was followed by a recitations of verses from the Al-Quran by Pengiran Amirul Aiman bin Pengiran Haji Marzuki, Education Officer at the Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic Boys Secondary School.
The special talk titled ‘The Hijrah of Rasulullah Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam: A Sacrifice for the Better’, was presented by Dr Arman bin Haji Asmad, Assistant Rector of UNISSA. A tausyeh performance by students of UNISSA then enlivened the celebration ceremony.
The event continued with a presentation of donations to nine new muslim converts who accepted the Islamic faith between Hijrah 1436 to 1437. The converts comprised of teachers and staff of the Ministry of Education and private education. The presentation was carried out by the newly appointed Minister of Home Affairs.

Carrying the theme ‘A Hijrah to being constructive’, the yearly event of the Ministry of Education was held to enliven and commemorate the historic event of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) journey from Makkah to Madinah.
In addition to building an Islamic country that is stable and respected, the event was also held to encourage cooperation and strong relations among members of the ministry as well as private education.
At least 500 people attended the event, comprised of senior officers, officers, lecturers from higher institutes of learning, school leaders and teachers from government schools and private learning institutions.
Also present were Dr Haji Junaidi bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the MoE; Associate Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, Vice Chancellor of Institut Teknologi Brunei; Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education)at the MoE; Dato Seri Setia Haji Yusoff bin Haji Awang Ismail Former Deputy Minister of Education; Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Learning) at the MOE; Dr Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, Rector of UNISSA, and Haji Abdul Rahim bin Derus, Director General of Education.
