FIRST-CLASS graduate Aziidah binti Jofri is among the 10 first-class achievers under the Brunei Shell Joint Venture (BSJV) scholarship, and will begin her career with Brunei Shell Petroleum Co Sdn Bhd (BSP) this Monday (September 5), where she will be assigned to Asset Engineering projects under AED III Processing Engineering.

She was inspired to apply for the scholarship scheme by her older sister, who took up Petroleum Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), which she also attended.

“I think that gave me a starting platform to where I am headed. Seeing how she progressed so much in terms of personal growth motivated me.”

For Aziidah, the most important aspect is personal achievement in terms of self-progression, and to keep improving herself by learning from mistakes.

During her employment, she will take on the four core values of BSP which are ‘Honesty, Integrity, Respect and Excellence’, as a foundation for her contributions to the company.

She is also optimistic that the oil industry will be around for quite a while, despite the current crisis, as well as the main driver in Brunei’s economy.

Fellow first-class recipient, Mohd Ali bin Mahdan, who graduated in Architectural Engineering from Cardiff University, shares the same views with Aziidah, and already looking forward to starting work at BSP.

Mohd Ali, who left for Cardiff in 2013 and graduated this year, will be joining the AED II Civil Structural Division at BSP.

He recounted the experiences of his final year, which he said were really challenging, since the course he undertook had only 20 students, which put more pressure on them to perform well.

It was while doing his final-year project that he approached his BSP seniors in AED II, “who really helped me a lot in terms of making me understand how structures really work, apart from the supervision from lecturers and BSJV in helping me to obtain software for the project.”

Meanwhile, Adrian James Yong Je Xiang, from Sayyidina Ali Secondary School in Kuala Belait, is the only scholarship recipient who will be studying overseas and is looking forward to furthering his studies at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom.

Adrian, who will be doing a course on Meteorology and Oceanography, said that he liked the idea of a scholarship coming together with a bond and the promise of a secure job at a well-established company.

“I have always had a fascination for marine or ocean studies, so when I found out that BSP was offering a scholarship for this course, my interest was really piqued,” he said.

Nurul Adibah, a former student of Jerudong International School (JIS), meanwhile, found the scholarship interview process difficult, but quite rewarding, as it taught her some new things in the process.

She chose to take Chemical Engineering, as it is a broad degree and not limited to one type of industry. “One could go to food, oil and gas or even in the medical field, since it doesn’t restrict me to one type of industry to work for,” she said.

“I am looking forward to learning more on Chemical Engineering in the next four years at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), as well as gaining new experience and finding more about the world.”

When asked about how she planned to contribute to BSP, Adibah said that she could come up with ways to process oil and gas, and perhaps advance the production deadline.
