Brunei delegation attends 28th ACWW conference

A SEVEN-MEMBER delegation from the Women’s Institute of Brunei Darussalam (WI) recently attended the 28th Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) Triennial Conference held in the University of Warwick, United Kingdom.

The delegation was led by Hajah Shamsiah binti Abdul Latif, Secretary of WI. The conference themed ‘Working Together for a Better Future’ focussed on three topics: Dementia, a growing global issue; WHO-Alliance for health promotions; and sustainable and renewable energies.

Hajah Shamsiah said the highlights of the conference included the election for the ACWW executive members for 2016-2019 that include World President, Deputy World President, Treasurer and Secretary.

Ruth Shanks was elected as World President for 2016-2019.

An election for nine ACWW area presidents – Canada, Caribbean and South America, Central and South Asia, East West and Central Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia and Far East, South Africa, South Pacific and USA – was also carried out.

Ibu Maria Abdul Karim from Indonesia was elected as the new ACWW area president for Southeast Asia and Far East.

The next ACWW World conference will be held in April 3-4, 2019.

The ACWW is an international association of women working on a shared vision of an improved quality of life for women and communities worldwide. With 420 member societies in 73 member countries, ACWW gives voice to over nine million rural and non-rural women.

The association believes that through cooperation and understanding, it can empower its members to create opportunities for women to exercise more power, make better decisions and change their lives for the better.

The delegates hope to share the knowledge and experience gained from the meeting with relevant agencies in the country.
