THE Brunei Council on Social Welfare (MKM) yesterday launched its training programme on financial literacy for primary schools in line with its Fidyah Scheme project.

The programme’s pilot batch comprises 24 students from Years 3 to 6 of Tanah Jambu Primary School. The programme is held in collaboration with Junior Achievement (JA) Brunei programme’s module ‘JA More than Money’.

The pilot batch attended the programme in three separate sessions at the MKM Resource Centre in Melabau Complex, Kg Melabau, Serusop.

Facilitated by MKM officers and youth volunteer facilitators trained by JA Brunei, the programme presents the concepts on the role money plays in the society, sharing, saving and spending, becoming a smart consumer and earning income by starting a business.

According to MKM, at the end of the programme, the hope that the students will be able to build on their understanding of money basics and apply those skills to daily life and recognise the significance of a sound money management.

The programme contains two interactive board games. Working as individuals and eventually as business teams, the students will navigate the community laid-out in the board game and discover opportunities to earn, share, save and spend their money.

They will learn how to keep track of their money in their bank accounts and in the final three sessions, the students will develop their business plans and create businesses based on their personal interests. These games will allow the students to practise their skills learned and teach them how to make informed financial choices and inspire them to continue using their money-management skills.

“We are grateful for JA Brunei to make this program available to MKM and its clients,” says Nur Judy binti Abdullah, Vice-President 1 of MKM, adding that the programme will also help them achieve their goal for their Fidyah Scheme project recipients, in helping them become financially literate.

“We are targeting to conduct at least two to three batches at a time for each primary schools who are in our Fidyah scheme as a supplementary programme. We will also extend the same programme to existing vulnerable children under our MKM client list,” she added.
