EIGHT people from various professions graduated from an English programme at the CfBT Education Services in Kiarong on Friday.
After four weeks of a demand-ing but rewarding course, the deserving professionals finally got their hands on a Cambridge Level 5 Certificate in ‘Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) (QCF)’, presented by Ben Brody, the Deputy British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam.
The respective graduates were Siti Khairuniza binti Ja’afar, Sangeetha Shetty, Sudharshana Gandha, Jean Kiekopf, Devi Barathan, Susan Cuhadar, Mandy Woods and Dominic Morley.
The graduation ceremony commenced with a welcoming speech by Dr Greg Keaney, Country Manager of CfBT Education Services, as he commended the efforts of the graduates in their achievements.
In a brief chat with the Weekend Bulletin, Dr Greg Keaney said the four-week long programme led the graduates to a global qualification to be able to teach English in most parts of the world, and the standard of English taught is the same for those in the United Kingdom and Australia.
He commended the high standard of English used in Brunei Darussalam, and added that the certificate is considered a post-graduate qualification where the participant follows “four hard weeks” of an English programme.

The graduate can then be able to teach English and adapt to countries where the natives can hardly speak a word of English, and also be able to teach English in Europe for example, explained Dr Keaney.
There were also remarks made by Rob Tunnell on the course programme, as he made a brief explanation on what the English programme entailed and what was required from the participants.
One of the graduates, Ms Sudharshana Gandha said the programme was very detailed, and even though she had an English teaching qualification prior to her stint in the programme, there were many “things to learn”, where the English taught at the programme was of a different level to what was taught in respective home countries of the participants.
Sudharshana Gandha, an English teacher for nine years, hails from Hyderabad, India. She has taught English in her native country as well as in neighbouring Nepal. Presently she is a teacher in International School Brunei.
One of the leading indepen-dent United Kingdom-based suppliers of education resource management and consultancy services, CfBT has spanned over 40 years of operation with vast experience all over the world.
