THE Brunei’s own cyber hacking game – the Cyber Battle: Capture The Flag 2016 was held yesterday at Mahligai Hall. The game that reached its final yesterday, started early in the morning and ended around 4.30pm with first and second winners to go to represent the country at the Cyber SEA Game 2016 in Bali at the end of this month.
The final round of Cyber Battle: Capture The Flag 2016 was witnessed by the public, where a total of 10 teams went head to head in the one-day computer hacking competition, exercising their cyber-security skills and exploiting vulnerabilities on game servers.
Game play was a Jeopardy-style, with different types of challenges including web, crypto, exploitation, digital forensics and packet analysis. Challenges are based on real IT scenarios, and participants are required to demonstrate their analysis techniques in order to solve them and score points.
The tournament was won by a team called ‘!null’ with 1,675 points in the final score, followed in the second place by Team FFQ with 1,375 points, and third place by Soapobot with 1,000 points.
The presents were handed over by Mohammed Riza bin Dato Paduka Haji Mohammed Yunos, Permanent Secretary (Media and Cabinet) at the Prime Minister’s Office, as guest of honour at the event.

Cyber Battle is an annual event organised for the 2nd time by local IT security specialist ITPSS Sdn Bhd with the support of AITI, as a means of highlighting the importance of IT and cyber-security and the growing need for such security specialists in Brunei Darussalam.
“Cyber Battle is an opportunity to gauge the competency level of IT professionals in the country in various areas and disciplines of IT and cyber-security,” according to Shamsul Bahri bin Haji Kamis, CEO of ITPSS. “Brunei is facing a shortage of IT and cyber security professionals. It is hoped that Cyber Battle would garner interest in choosing IT and cyber-security as their field of choice of profession.”
On the sidelines of the competition, ITPSS also showcased some of their specialised IT security services including mobile forensics, computer forensics, data recovery, managed security services (MSS), Multi-Agency Coordination System (MACS), IT security awareness, E-Learning for Information Security Environment (ELISE) and RFID event management solution (TAGG). Korean company Duzon was also on hand demonstrating their DFAS digital forensics software.
