A DELEGATION of 20 young Bruneians left for Japan to take part in a the Government of Japan-run programme dubbed JENESYS 2016 yesterday.
The group comprised 11 students and instructors from Universiti Brunei Darussalam and Institute of Brunei Technical Education, and nine members of the Federation of Brunei Malay Entrepreneurs (PPPMB) and is the second batch of JENESYS 2016.
The Government of Japan is slated to invite altogether 250 Bruneians to Japan under JENESYS 2016 during this fiscal year ending in March 2017.
The theme for this batch is agriculture and they will be visiting the Fukushima Agricultural Technology Centre; the Ten-ei Village, Fukushima Prefecture, well known for its high quality rice produce; and Kyurin-kan, Sukagawa City, Fukushima Prefecture, a facility located in Japan’s leading cucumber producing area and is equipped with a large-scale machine to sort cucumbers according to their size.

The Government of Japan hopes this programme will contribute to the relaxation of the restrictions which have been imposed by the Government of Brunei on food importation from the Fukushima Prefecture following the nuclear plant accident that happened in the prefecture in 2011.
The programme includes a visit to the Fukushima Prefecture and it is hoped that the participants will have a first-hand look at the prefecture, meet people who are actually engaged in food production there and reconsider whether it is appropriate to continue such restrictions.
