SAO PAULO (AFP) – It was all about business and clean colours at the 40th edition of Sao Paulo Fashion Week (SPFW) as some of Brazil’s top designers showed off their latest winter lines in Brazil’s premier fashion event.
Hot out of the gates was ANIMALE, the Rio de Janeiro-based, high-end, women’s label. The winter collection of the SPFW staple did not let down with its clean, flowing looks accentuated by large overcoats and bags to compliment solid colors of black, white and earth tones splashed with reds and greens.
The creative director for SPFW, Paulo Borges, said the 40th edition was even more special as it comes as Brazil faces its worst recession in decades.
“It is very special because it is the 40th edition, because it comes at a time when Brazil is talking a lot about the economic crisis… fashion shows Brazil’s strengths, shows its creativity, shows that it is a forward-looking economy. It doesn’t look back. Fashion has that ability – to be resilient, to always be transformative and bet on Brazilian economic development through innovation and creativity,” Borges said of SPFW which has run two shows a year for 20 years now.
Uma, by Raquel Davidowicz, followed up with equally bold looks for the labels show. Lead designer Raquel Davidowicz said she the collection mixed both luxury and comfort. “I’m going to present a very eclectic collection, with a lot of mixture in materials, mixing a lot of comfort and luxury,” Davidowicz said.
Long-sleeved frocks in silk and tulle were among the highlights of Brazilian designer Alexandre Herchcovitch’s collection, which seemed playfully to allude to the themes of sex and power.
The collection featured attire almost entirely in shades of black, white, or black-and-white plaid, some with peek-a-boo cutouts.
Statuesque models strutted in knee-high patent leather stiletto boots accessorising flowing, calf-length skirts. Sao Paulo Fashion Week is regarded as the world’s fifth largest fashion week and is considered the premier fashion event in Latin America.
