Turkish envoy lauds bilateral ties with Brunei

THE Diplomatic Corps in Brunei Darussalam held a farewell luncheon at The Rizqun International Hotel yesterday, for the outgoing Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Brunei Darussalam, Fikret Oguz Ates, and his spouse, Magda Ates.

Saleh Mohammed Al-Nasef, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Brunei Darussalam, delivered a farewell speech, in which he wished good health and prosperity to the outgoing Turkish ambassador.

“You have achieved impressive success since the opening of the Turkish Embassy in 2013, and became the first Turkish Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam,” he said.

In his speech, Ates said that he and his spouse had greatly enjoyed working and living in Brunei for the last three years.

“Many good things have been achieved in the bilateral relations between Brunei Darussalam and Republic of Turkey,” he said. “Since the opening up of both countries towards each other, significant achievements in foreign direct investments have been achieved.

“By lifting visa requirements, new avenues have opened up for cooperation, especially in the areas of tourism. We have seen increasing numbers of Bruneians visiting Turkey, and vice-versa.

“In the field of education…we engaged and encouraged Bruneian students to apply for the Turkish scholarship programme. I am glad to see that it has become increasingly popular among Bruneians, some of whom are participating as exchange students in Turkish universities,” he concluded.
