IN CONJUNCTION with its 30 years of establishment, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday held a thanksgiving prayer at its mosque, seeing the attendance of Minister of Education Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman as guest of honour.
Also present for the event were Minister of Health in his capacity as the Vice-Chancellor of UBD Dato Paduka Dr Awang Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi, Deputy Minister of Education Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, UBD council members, senior officers, lecturers, and UBD alumni.
The event commenced with mass Maghrib prayers and Sunnat Hajat prayers. Following this was the recitation of Surah Yaasiin, Tahlil and thanksgiving prayer.
In celebrating the 30th anniversary, the university continues its mission of providing greater opportunities and expanding the horizons and potential of students.
UBD looks to contribute to producing human resources equipped with knowledge and skills through world-class education and research, in addition to playing a role in national development.

UBD was established in 1985, opening its doors to the first intake of 176 students on October 28, that year. Today, the first choice university in Brunei Darussalam boasts 86 PhD candidates, 657 Masters students and 4,050 undergraduates. Through its internationalisation initiatives, UBD now hosts 437 international students on campus – a 19 per cent increase from the previous year.
Over the years, UBD has notched milestones in higher education in terms of international recognition, education and research excellence. UBD was ranked 118th among the best universities in Asia in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Ranking this year. It was also ranked as the top university for student mobility, being positioned No 1 in outbound students and No 2 in inbound students.
UBD introduced its flagship GenNEXT curriculum, a broad-based transdisciplinary framework, providing students the flexibility to tailor studies according to their individual learning styles. The innovative curriculum received much praise from higher education professionals around the globe and was described by QS as ‘groundbreaking.’
UBD has also made remarkable achievements in research such as the invention of an improved system for analysing Halal content of food, finding solutions for early detection of cancer biomarkers, and invention of energy saving technologies.
As of this year, UBD has filed 33 patents for its research, 20 of which have sought for international protection. UBD today has six granted patents in total – four local patents and two international patents, one each in Singapore and the United States.
