EIDPMO organises seminar on exploring Islamic Fintech

A SEMINAR on ‘Exploring Islamic Fintech’ was held yesterday, organised by the Energy and Industry Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EIDPMO) in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea.

The Islamic Fintech (financial technology) seminar, which was also supported by Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD), took place at the Prime Minister’s Office Building, and was held to provide a platform for an exchange of views on investment and financial regulatory framework in addition to sharing the latest technological trends and business models of Fintech in Korea.

Present as guest of honour was Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud, Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs. Also present were Kim Jung Hoon, member of Industry and Trade Committee, National Assembly from Republic of Korea and Cho Won Myung, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Brunei Darussalam.

Islamic finance is one of the fastest growing segments of the financial industry in many parts of the world. This positive growth continues to be supported by the progressive development of Fintech or financial technology which has taken the financial industry by storm.

About 250 participants attended the seminar, which began with welcoming remarks by Julianah binti Ali Ahmad, Head of the Innovative, Technology and Creative Industry Division (ITCID) at the EIDPMO, as the chairperson for the event.

“We are organising this Islamic Fintech seminar today with aims to explore the potential application of financial technologies and opportunities in Islamic Fintech for both Brunei and Korea. With Brunei’s strengths in Islamic finance and Korea in technology and solutions provider, the time is ripe for both countries to exploit Islamic Fintech that can create a new economy, new market and new growth in the financial sector.”

“We are grateful to have distinguished speakers and experts from both the Republic of Korea and Brunei Darussalam to share with us some interesting insights on Islamic finance, e-payment and cooperation opportunities in Islamic Fintech.”

“We hope that today‘s seminar will provide great opportunities for the businesses as well as the financial institutions from both countries to gain the insights and knowledge on the possible applications and collaboration in Islamic Fintech,” she added. “We strongly encourage the local industry to continue to embrace Fintech and new innovations in order to create vibrant and sustainable businesses for the economic growth of the country.”

Kim Jung Hoon then delivered remarks, in which he expressed his delight to see a great opportunity for both Brunei and Korea to discuss ways of cooperation in the field of Fintech industry, which he said is “the next generation global industry”.

“It is my genuine hope that today’s seminar will be the starting point for our two to cooperate closely not only in the field of Fintech industry, but also in various areas,” he continued. “I hope that today’s seminar will result in great success and many achievements for further cooperation and enhancement of Fintech industry between our two countries.”

A keynote speech was then delivered by the guest of honour, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti.

There were four speakers at the seminar, including two from Korea, namely Kim Tae Bong from the Korea Fintech Industry Association on the ‘Cooperation Measures between Brunei and Korea to Target Islamic Fintech Market’ and Kim Bo Ram from Paycock Co Ltd on the ‘Korean E-Payment Business Models’ as well as two invited speakers from Brunei Darussalam comprising Haji Mohd Hairul Azrin bin Haji Besar from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) who presented on ‘Islamic Finance: The insights’ and Lim Shaw Fhen from AMBD.

The event’s finale was an open forum session participated by a panel of the four speakers and moderated by Keeran Janin.

The Korean delegation consisted of representatives from various agencies including Busan Finance Centre, Financial Supervisory Service Institute; Korea Fintech Association, KTB Solution (ICT Security & Authentication), NSC Information and Communication Co Ltd (Hardware Solution), Paycock Co Ltd (Payment Gateway), Jayoung Tech Co Ltd (Mobility Platform Service), Hangook IR Consulting (Venture Capital) and Korea Dae-Sung Asset Management (Venture Capital).

It is hoped that the presentations and discussions from the seminar would provide some beneficial insights into the exciting world of Fintech from an Islamic perspective for the participants.
