IT WAS a journey down memory lane as former Chemistry teacher Essie Mathew returned to Brunei for a short visit after 16 years.

The former expat taught chemistry in Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien (SOAS) College from 1971 in both sixth form and ‘O’ Level classes for 15 years before shifting to Raja Isteri Girls High School (STPRI) to teach for the remaining 16 years before her move to Australia in 2001.

In an interview with the Bulletin, Mathew highlighted the high education standard in Brunei Darussalam compared to other countries and said that students should appreciate the opportunities provided by the government in terms of free education and chances to broaden their experiences aboard.

She also said that she was proud of the accomplishments her former students had made, helping shape Brunei to what it is today.
