A FLEET of 24 vintage Volkswagens from Brunei, Sarawak and Kalimantan set out yesterday morning for the Borneo Bug Fest 2016 in Kota Kinabalu, after being flagged off from the Dermaga Diraja Bandar Seri Begawan.
The guest of honour was Wardi bin Haji Mohammad Ali, the Deputy Permanent Secretary (Tourism) at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, who flagged off the convoy after he was given a close-up tour of the vintage ‘Beetles’ by Haji Hamid bin Haji Abu Bakar, the Vice-President of the Brunei Classic Volkswagen Club.
This year, 10 Beetles from the Brunei Classic Volkswagen Club are joining the Borneo Bug Fest, which is twice the number from last year’s participation.
According to Haji Mohd Saifuddin bin Dato Haji Mahalle, the coordinator for the journey, “We have a bigger number in participation this year, and it’s also the first time that convoys from Sarawak and Kalimantan have stopped in Brunei for some sightseeing.

“The Sarawak and Kalimantan teams arrived in Brunei on Wednesday, after which they visited local attractions such as the Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah and the Istana Nurul Iman. They also made a stop at Maju Motors, which is sponsoring Brunei’s participation at the Borneo Bug Fest this year.”
Brunei’s Beetle team will be contested in various categories during the Borneo Bug Fest 2016, and it is hoped that the gathering will promote closer networking among classic Volkswagen owners in the region.
