OVER 280 volunteers yesterday rolled their sleeves up for the Berakas Beach Clean Up 2015 organised by Fitness Zone in conjunction with World Diabetes Day. The volunteers came from four organisations – Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College (MTSSR), Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Secondary School, Yayasan volunteer group and Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA).

“The day saw 372 kilogrammes of trash collected,” said Beach Bunch President Rizan, who explained that the most common things left behind at beaches are bottles and plastic bags.

The amount collected was substantially less compared to the 1,000 kilogrammes of trash picked up recently during the Tungku Beach cleaning campaign.

Meanwhile, Fitness Zone Managing Director Wu Chun noted that the event was held in conjunction with World Diabetes Day to help promote a healthy lifestyle and awareness of diabetes. He said this was the fourth time Fitness Zone conducted a cleaning campaign.

“I am happy to note that the beach is a lot cleaner today than it was before. This proves that people now have better environmental awareness,” said Wu Chun.

This was the first time Fitness Zone joined forces with the Beach Bunch for a cleaning campaign. A yoga session was also conducted.
