HIS Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen has highlighted the importance of strengthening security measures, intelligence collaboration and sharing of best practices to counter the threat of terrorism.

A longer term solution should focus on the root causes of terrorism in a comprehensive manner at all levels, His Royal Highness said in a sabda at the Retreat Session I of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) at Fort Saint Angelo, Vittoriosa, Republic of Malta last Saturday.

Brunei Darussalam totally condemns the recent attacks in France, Lebanon and Mali that have greatly heightened the climate of fear, His Royal Highness said, adding that these terrifying acts have threatened the most basic sense of security, way of life and destroyed many hopes and dreams.

These threats should not be associated with any religion, nationality, race or ethnicity, said His Royal Highness who attended the meeting as the personal representative of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

His Royal Highness said that Brunei Darussalam has participated in inter-faith dialogues and worked with many regional and international partners on projects to promote tolerance and understanding, and will continue to do so and support the various Commonwealth efforts and UN-led initiatives to address this issue.

During the Retreat Session I, leaders discussed global developments and challenges highlighting violent extremism and radicalisation.

His Royal Highness also conveyed greetings from His Majesty to Dr Joseph Muscat, Prime Minister of the Republic of Malta as the Chairman of CHOGM 2015, and all his colleagues.

The Retreat Session I was followed by a Luncheon for the Commonwealth Heads of Government and the Retreat Session II of CHOGM where discussions focused on migration and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At the Retreat Session II, His Royal Highness delivered a sabda which included his recognition of irregular movement of people as a difficult and sensitive issue that has caused a global humanitarian problem.

His Royal Highness said the same complex problem is faced by the Asean region and that Brunei Darussalam is working together with Asean member countries to address this issue together.

On the SDGs, His Royal Highness highlighted how Brunei Darussalam started its journey to achieve SDGs by implementing an agenda which is people-centred, inclusive and comprehensive.

In that regard, Brunei Darussalam is already taking initial steps to ensure that its national plan goes side by side with the targets of the SDGs. Such initial steps includes the green economy, environmental sustainability and greater employment opportunities.

His Royal Highness also stated the importance for Brunei Darussalam to enhance partnership among all stakeholders concerned, especially through capacity-building and sharing best practices.

His Royal Highness then held a bilateral meeting with Dr Joseph Muscat, Prime Minister of the Republic of Malta to exchange views on bilateral relations and efforts to enhance cooperation between the two countries.

Accompanying His Royal Highness to the bilateral meeting were Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II; and Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office.
