TO CATER to the growing demand for Internet coverage in public areas, Telekom Brunei Berhad (TelBru) will be unveiling a first-of-its-kind Wi-Fi service that runs on its home broadband network.

The new Nationwide Wi-Fi Service, which will provide customers faster access to the Internet outside their homes at selected locations across the country, will be officially launched in the first quarter of 2016, Lim Ming Soon, TelBru’s Chief Marketing Officer, said.

Officiating the soft launching of the service at The Coffee Bean Brunei branch in Times Square Shopping Centre, he said there will be a two-three-month trial period during which the service will not be linked to the home broadband. Members of the public could try out the network for free during this period and provide feedback to TelBru to further refine the network to enjoy consistent speed, he added.

Lim explained the process of getting TelBru Wi-Fi services on smartphones or tablets. There will be a one-time SMS access code. Then input the name, mobile phone number as well as the nationality. Once clicked submit, an SMS will be sent to the mobile phone and the user only needs to key in the code for free Internet access.

Currently there are 20 locations where TelBru Wi-Fi services are available including Times Square Shopping Centre, Mabohai Shopping Complex, Supa Save Mabohai, Supa Save Beribi, KB Sentral, Fratini’s Restaurant branches, TelBru’s branches, Excapade’s branches, The Coffee Bean Brunei branches. The TelBru Wi-Fi zone signage will be on display at shopping centres and selected restaurants in the country, Lim said.

Separately during a press conference, Lim emphasised that the Nationwide Wi-Fi Service is part of TelBru’s long-term strategy to expand its reach into the wireless segment by creating a platform for more compelling services and products where portability and accessibility to the Internet is critical.

“TelBru’s Wi-Fi is the next step of our innovation and I haven’t seen any other country has done this yet. We want our customers to have the same kind of flexibility when they are on the move from home to wherever they go,” Lim said.

With the new data plan that was launched in March this year, he added, “customers can enjoy inexpensive data wherever they go – like for a movie, shopping, lunch or dinner”.

Lim also welcomed business premises to work with TelBru to provide the Wi-Fi service in their areas.

He also revealed that with the nationwide launch of TelBru Wi-Fi, the company will also be introducing its prepaid option for locals and tourists to use the Wi-Fi service.

Shop owners interested to have the Wi-Fi service installed at their premises may directly contact TelBru at wifi@telbru.com.bn.
