His Majesty awards prizes to top Qari, Qariah

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday graced the closing of the 7th Southeast Asian Youth Al-Quran Reading Competition at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.

Also in attendance were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik and His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Wakeel.

Cabinet Ministers and state dignitaries also attended the ceremony.

The competition this year saw the involvement of 19 participants (10 Qari and nine Qariah) from 10 countries. The champion in the Qari category was Mohammad Husaini bin Mahmur (Malaysia), followed by Kamaruddin Gunda Zaidon (the Philippines) in second place and Awangku Adi Nazri bin Pengiran Haji Jofri (Brunei) in third place.

Raihana Guaimlod Ambangala (the Philippines) ranked in first place in the Qariah category, followed by Munawaroh Tarmizi Ilyas (Indonesia) and Awatif binti Abdul Majid (Malaysia).

The function began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah by Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abd Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti. Later, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah, who is also Chairman of the Executive Committee of the event, delivered a welcoming speech.

His Majesty then consented to deliver a titah.

After a video compilation of the Al-Quran reading performances, the winners of the 7th Southeast Asian Youth Al-Quran Reading Competition then presented recitations of verses from the Al-Quran.

The monarch later awarded trophies and prizes to the champions and consolation prize to the remaining participants.
