A TOTAL of 28 participants of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) National Referee Clinic completed a course in updating them on FIBA’s latest basketball regulations on Sunday following a certificate presentation ceremony.
On hand to give away the certificates was the guest of honour Hajah Noor Maslina binti Haji Sulaiman, Chief Officer of Youth and Sports (Youth). Also in attendance were Dr Chan Sui Kiat, the honorary advisor to the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA), Lim Ting Guan, the President of Brunei Basketball Association and others members.
Lt Col (Rtd) Lee Kak Kuan, the Technical Advisor from FIBA Asia who is in Brunei Darussalam to conduct the FIBA National Referee Clinic in an interview said, “FIBA would like to congratulate BBA for a successful clinic aimed at updating referees on changes in rules as well as officiating mechanics.”
“The Brunei Basketball Ass-ociation may not have the best basketball players in the region but it has the potential to produce the best officials or coaches. I also hope that everyone could work together to further build on the game of basketball to a higher level in the country,” he added.
The Technical Advisor from FIBA Asia also hoped to return to Brunei in July to take a closer look at officiating in big local tournaments.
Asked about the potential of Brunei having an active pool of FIBA official referees, he said, “There is potential but there is a need to incentivise and encourage the interested referees to work toward the goal of becoming FIBA official referee.”
