AS PART of its efforts to enhance the quality of education, the Ministry of Education (MoE) held the 5th National Education Forum yesterday at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.
In attendance as the guest of honour was the Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman. The Deputy Minister of Education, Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar was also present.
The National Education Forum was divided into three sessions that all took place in the morning.
The first session (dubbed “What Went Well”) gave participants from schools nationwide the opportunity to discuss, reflect and share positive aspects in the fields of academia, community involvement, parents and all developments in their respective schools over the course of 2015.
The second session (“Even Better If”) saw participants discuss and exchange views on areas that could be improved upon, be it in terms of initiatives, processes or school management issues.
Finally, the third session (“Feed Forward”) had participants from each cluster prepare five strategies on the way forward, based upon the results of the first two sessions.
Meanwhile, the afternoon saw the proceedings continue with a discussion on the forum’s resolution before going into the presentation of the Primary School Assessment (PSR) Incentive Awards 2015.
On hand to facilitate the sessions was Dr Haji Junaidi bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education along with Heads of Clusters and officers from the Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Advancement (ILIA) of Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
Before the sessions themselves took place, welcoming remarks were delivered by the Chairperson of the forum, Zaman bin Haji Gapar, the Acting Director of Schools.
In his remarks, he shared that the event involves 360 participants comprising leaders, principals and heads of primary and secondary schools, colleges, sixth form centres as well as cluster officers.
“Armed with a variety of background knowledge and leadership experience, these school leaders are expected to brainstorm and make dynamic suggestions that can help produce a resolution that will serve as a guideline for schools to achieve the desired goals.”
Aside from the instructional leadership of school leaders, the role of principals and headmasters as curriculum leaders should also be given the same attention, he said.
“The Ministry of Education and Department of Schools recognises that all school leaders and teachers have strived well to enhance the quality of their students’ achievements for their futures, without caring for fatigue, sacrificing their time, energy and money,” he said.
He expressed his hope that the forum would achieve its goals as well as provide motivation and produce a new guideline and strategy to further strengthen efforts in enhancing excellence in education.
He also went on to highlight that holding this forum is hoped to help build a network of support and intellectual communication between school leaders to facilitate the transition from primary to secondary for both students and educators.
Among the attendees yesterday was the Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the MoE, Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh; Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the MoE, Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz; and the Director-General of Education, Haji Abdul Rahim bin Derus.
The event also saw the attendance of directors, school leaders and officers under the Ministry of Education.
