CAR boot sales or mini open air supermarkets are experiencing a surge in popularity in Brunei at the moment.
The activities are most notably held during Bandarku Ceria – the country’s car-free initiative on every Sunday which began in the capital a few years ago – providing local residents a medium to sell their unwanted used items at discounted and reasonable prices.
Traders would converge in the heart of the capital as early as 5.30am on Sundays to secure good spots to set up their stalls, while visitors looking for a good bargain or two can be observed arriving early at the venue as well.
Highly sought-after items include clothes, women’s handbags, electrical appliances, women’s accessories, as well as antique items including watches.
Fried food, local delicacies and drinks are also available. Most sellers would stay at the venue as long as possible, usually till mid-noon, till the roads re-open.
“Profits are reasonable and encouraging at times,” said a trader.
“This is an opportunity for me to learn how to start a business and also to generate extra income. Most of my customers are foreign workers.”
The latest car boot sale to run in Brunei is the one by the International Women’s Club today at the Royal Brunei Recreation Club in Berakas starting at 7am.
