TWO students were sent off at the Brunei International Airport yesterday to attend the 8th International Science Youth Forum (ISYF) to be held in Singapore from January 17-21.
The students, Muhammad Nur Aiman bin Haji Roslan from Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar Secondary School and Nurul Atiqah binti Haji Abu Bakar from Meragang Sixth Form Centre were accompanied by Mariana binti Haji Ibrahim, a Lead Teacher for Gifted Education from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College.
The students were nominated by their respective schools and selected after a series of screening processes that consisted of annual screening and identification measures conducted by the Gifted Education Programmes and Services (GEPS) at the Special Education Unit, Ministry of Education.
GEPS is also dedicated to identifying students for international gifted student programmes. In addition to local programmes, participation in overseas programmes is considered as one of the platforms to extend and develop students’ gifted talents.
Identified gifted Bruneian students and their Science teachers have been selected to participate at the ISYF since its inception in 2009.

ISYF 2016 is a world-class programme jointly organised by Hwa Chong Institution and the Institution of Advanced Studies, Nanyang Technological University and supported by the Ministry of Education, Singapore and its main sponsor Agency for Science, Technology and Research.
ISYF aims to provide high-ability students with opportunities to be engaged in Science. To inspire students, Nobel Laureates and other eminent scientists will share their life experiences.
This will create greater awareness among the youth about the importance of broad-based knowledge, keen curiosity, relentless tenacity and a global outlook in the pursuit of scientific excellence.
Participants will also have oppor-tunities to discuss their own research with fellow students from different countries and take part in hands-on science activities.
This year’s Nobel Laureates for ISYF are Sir Anthony James Leggett (Nobel Prize in Physics 2003), Professor Jerome Isaac Friedman (Nobel Prize in Physics 1990), Professor Carlo Rubbia (Nobel Prize in Physics 1984), Professor David Jonathan Gross (Nobel Prize in Physics 2004), Professor Ei-ichi Negishi (Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2010), Professor John Robin Warren (Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine 2005) and Sir Tim Hunt (Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine 2001).
The Nobel Laureates will demonstrate how abstract science can be distilled into simpler, comprehensible explanations, which will be in line with this year’s theme, ‘Communicating Science’.
It is hoped that the experience and opportunity will deepen the student’s understanding of science so they may be inspired to pursue the sciences.
ISYF incorporates challenging research-based Science activities using best practices, qualified and trained renowned experts as well as first class resources to expose students to the breadth and depth of Science.
