TEDxYouth@Gadong, in collaboration with Jerudong International School (JIS), will be hosting a day of informative talks on January 24, which will focus on topics such as ‘Youth and Technology’, ‘How the Internet works’, ‘Cyber Bullying’, ‘Narcissism’, and ‘Feminism and Technology’.

Speaking to the Bulletin, Mohammad Izzat Fadhli Embran and Chynna Tan, the organisers of TEDxYouth@Gadong, described TEDx Youth@Gadong as a gateway for the youth to generate and share ideas on the relevance of technology, which can be beneficial when used responsibly.

A total of 14 youth speakers and three guest speakers will participate in the talks, namely Yussof Sidek, the Head of IT Security at BIBD; Dr Masters, the Toastmaster of Brunei’s Speakers Club; and Delwin Keasberry, a two-time TEDx speaker.

In an interview, Meghana Bharadwaj, the Head of the JIS organising committee, explained that the selected youth speakers underwent a filtering process out of 40 people.

The panel of judges during the selection process included Sarimah Latiff, the Senior Advisor and Co-partner of TEDxYouth@Gadong, and teachers from JIS, who oversaw the application, audition and selections; and who provided coaching and advice to participants.

One of the chosen youth speakers is Siang Jin Law, who will be discussing “Feminism and Technology”, where she hopes to increase awareness on gender inequality including the stigmatism surrounding feminism, and the role of technology in the development of modern feminism.

“I am very passionate about this topic, and TEDxYouth@Gadong provides an excellent platform to raise awareness to discuss this issue,” she said.

Each speaker will discuss thought-provoking topics relevant to modern technology and society during the sessions, which will take place from 9am to 4pm, on January 24.

Tickets are available on Monday and Thursday from 5pm onwards at the Coffee Bean in Mata-Mata. Lunch, refreshments, and some live performances by a local performer Method 6, and a JIS student are inclusive of ticket prices.
