THE Association of Former Religious Teachers (PERGA) has been urged to increase its activities to promote more religious events within the country, which falls in line with Brunei’s aspirations of becoming a Zikir Nation.
The association, which was formed three years ago with 100 members, has also been called on to increase the number of memberships in order to achieve the objective of PERGA, which is to contribute towards the contry’s socio-economic development.
The call was made by Haji Harun bin Haji Junid, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, during the 3rd PERGA General Meeting, at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Amal Umi Kalthum Al-Islam Religious School in Kampong Mulaut.
In his speech, the deputy permanent secretary said that retirement does not necessarily mean the end of a career for a religious teacher or a official, since religious education is a lifelong skill which can also be seen as a quest to embracing and promoting Islamic knowledge.
“I hope that the association’s members will continue to realise the aspirations of a strong-willed nation, while moving towards a more prosperous economy,” he said.
The event coincided with the launching of a book produced by PERGA, titled, “Teachers as Successors to the Prophets”.
The President of PERGA, Haji Abdul Rahim bin Haji Gantang, said that the book-writing process began from the previous committee, and was continued by the current one.
He said that the publication would be freely distributed to religious teachers, in the hopes of using it to disseminate religious knowledge among students.
Aside from discussing major topics, and the association’s balance sheet, the 3rd General Meeting witnessed the appointment of the 2013-2015 PERGA Executive Committee, and the dissolution of the 2011-2013 PERGA Executive Committee.
