BRUNEI Darussalam has a long term role in Shell’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) portfolio and the company is keen to continue growing the gas business together with the Sultanate, recognising that there is a lot of gas potential in the country from current production and exploration.

This was said by Maarten Wetselaar, Executive Vice President of Shell Integrated Gas, in response to questions on Monday following a presentation at Shell’s office in Singapore.

In his presentation he spoke about the developments of liquefied natural gas (LNG) both globally and in Asia. He highlighted Shell’s belief that the future of the company and the industry itself is inextricably linked to gas taking its place in the energy mix.

When asked by the Bulletin how Brunei fits into Shell’s gas strategy, Wetselaar said, “The historical role for Brunei is of course completely central to this agenda. It was the first LNG project we ever did and as we went on expanding it, it became a big source of energy for us and for the market.

“It has really seeded confidence in Japan and later on, in Korea that the LNG market would work, so it’s operating form through the decades has been an important proof point for the industry that LNG can be relied on; that the gas will be there.

“Still today, at about seven million tonnes, it is a substantial LNG supplier. It is bigger than many bigger or better known countries and we still believe there is a lot of gas potential in Brunei, both from the current production, and we continue to have good performance in the plant, but also from an exploration side.

“We think there are reserves in the shallow and in the deeper waters in Brunei that can be unlocked. We continue to work at both in our Brunei Shell Petroleum venture but also separately from it where the acres are not held by BSP.

“So we see Brunei LNG as playing a very long-term role in the LNG portfolio of Shell,” he said, highlighting that as the portfolio grows, the country remains to be “where many of our tenants grew up and that we want to keep going for a very long time.

“We’ve been in Brunei for 85 years. We feel at home. We feel welcome. We’ve had ups and downs and we always work through them with the Bruneians around us.

“You don’t give up that kind of home if you can help it, so we are there for the long term and we are keen to grow the gas business together with Brunei,” he concluded.
