IN THE efforts to spread the Global Goals campaign to the next generation of local leaders, the Australian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Todd Mercer hosted a stimulating seminar at his residence in Kota Batu yesterday.
Global Citizen advocate and professional resident nomad volunteer d’Arcy Lunn conducted the seminar with a quest to spread the Global Goals across the world.
Prior to his visit to Brunei, d’Arcy recently travelled to Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore and spoke with more than 3,000 students.
“Making sure everyone in the world knows about the ‘Goals’ is a herculean task. How are you supposed to make sure every single person in every country, in every town and city, in every room and on every walkway knows about the ‘Goals’?”, he asked the audience yesterday, which comprises of local leaders across the Brunei government, the private sector and civil society.
D’Arcy identified 17 Global Goals and inspired the audience to believe that all goals can be achieved if everyone gets involved.
Among the goals are no more gender inequality, no more hunger, no more preventable diseases, education for all, dignified work for all and a vibrant, healthy environment for all.
Also, by spreading the Global Goals, local leaders have a ‘guiding set of values’, which will make the next generation of leaders even more committed.
Since his last visit to Brunei in 2014, d’Arcy has been working on Polio eradication in South Sudan with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO), and has travelled extensively throughout the Balkans, Europe and Central Asia spreading the word about the importance of polio eradication and living the life of a global citizen.
The High Commissioner commented, “We are pleased to have d’Arcy back here to share with us more of his rich and broad experiences as a global citizen.
“With leaders now gathering in New York to discuss the new Global Goals for Sustainable Development, his topic is timely and should inspire us all to make positive shifts in our commitments to social, environmental and global justice.”
As a platform for discussion and knowledge exchange, the seminar also provided a valuable opportunity for local leaders in the sustainability field to gain new insights in to what it means to be global citizen today.
