THE Ministry of Education, in cooperation with the Ministry of Religious Affairs, yesterday held a Teachers’ Day (Special Mention) Appreciation Award Presentation ceremony in conjunction with the 25th Teacher’s Day celebration at the International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas.
Present as the guest of honour was the Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, who also delivered a speech and presented the awards to 19 recipients.
Also present at the event was the Minister of Religious Affairs, Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman, and the Deputy Minister of Education, Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yusoff bin Haji Ismail.
The event began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah that was specially read for Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam as well as teachers that have passed away, as well as a Doa Selamat led by Haji Azrol bin Haji Zaini, Mosque Affairs Officer of Pintu Malim Mosque.
The celebration was later continued with the recitation of Surah Ali ‘Imran verses 190 to 195 by Haji Ayop bin Haji Abdul Ghani, an Education Officer at the Assistant Director’s (Professional) Officer from the Department of Islamic Studies, while the translation of the verses was read by Haji Azulhanita bin Awang Haji Tarip, religious teacher at the Sungai Akar Arabic School.

The choir performance in the form of a Teacher’s Day medley for ‘Guru Oh Guru’ and ‘Terima Kasih Cikgu’ was later performed by the Jauqah Al-Mumtaz Group led by Cikgu Pengiran Haji Mohd Khairul Amilin bin Pengiran Haji Yahya
Also included during the event was a speech by the chairman of the event, Haji Abdul Rahim bin Derus, Director General of Education at the Ministry of Education, who stated that a total of 138 recipients have had the privilege of receiving the Teachers’ Day Appreciation Award since its inception in 2007.
The award, said the chairman, is for teachers or teaching staff and school leaders that are still under service in government and private education institutions that show outstanding performance in the field of teaching and school leadership in the country but have not met the criteria to be nominated as Excellent Teachers.
“It is hoped that the Teachers’ Day Appreciation Award can inject passion and motivation to the recipients and teachers in general in becoming more persistent, creative and innovative,” said the chairman.
Haji Abdul Rahim later announced that the 19 award recipients comprise of one educator from a Higher Education Institution, four from the Technical and Vocational Institution, one from a Sixth Form Centre, five from Government Secondary Schools and Colleges, four from Government Primary Schools, three from Religious and Arabic Schools, and one from a Youth Development Centre.
The recipients, added the chairman, are chosen out of hundreds of nominees around the country from various levels of educational institutions as well as various subjects and fields.
Moreover, the recipients have also gone through a number of selection levels such as the Institutional level, Department, Ministry and National levels.
Prior to the end of his speech, Haji Abdul Rahim stated that the responsibility of teachers in education the nation’s youth is not an easy task and it demands a huge contribution and sacrifice, which makes the recognition more valuable and meaningful in appreciating the contributions and achievements of teachers in their own fields.
The event was then continued by a speech by the Minister of Education, followed by the presentation of awards.

The event was held to give appreciation to teaching staff or teachers that have contributed in producing successful students in various subjects and fields, and is active in handling and implementing programmes, projects or participates in activities whether on the institutional or school level, or those conducted by other agencies.
