BANK Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) yesterday reached yet another milestone in its illustrious history when the largest Islamic bank in the country launched its first contactless Visa credit card powered by the Visa payWave Technology.

The Contactless payment card is designed to replace the use of cash in the busy retail environment, whereby cardholders can complete their transaction with ease by waving the card on a reader without the need to swipe the card or sign for purchases.

Present to launch the new BIBD Visa credit card were Hajah Nurul Akmar binti Haji Mohd Jaafar, Deputy Head of Retail Banking of BIBD, and Siti Rafeah binti Haji Jakir, Head of Card products of BIBD.

“In today’s world, we can see that there is a new demand for electronic payment created through the convergence of the Internet and mobile technologies,” said Hajah Nurul Akmar binti Haji Mohd Jaafar. “Consumers worldwide including BIBD’s customers want the ability to easily pay online via mobile banking or perhaps even in the social networking environment.”

“It is only befitting that we expand our own offerings to include an additional mode of payment through our partnership with Visa by introducing Brunei’s first Syariah compliance contactless BIBD Visa credit cards, namely the BIBD Visa Platinum and BIBD Visa Gold,” she added.

The contactless BIBD Visa credit cards include an array of discounts and year-long as well as seasonal exclusive offers with a wide variety of merchants.

For the platinum card, the card holder is able to enjoy a yearly complimentary priority pass membership card and gain access to a host of Visa Concierge services.

“Visa is pleased to partner with BIBD to launch the BIBD Visa Gold and Visa Platinum card with Visa payWave capability. The number of Visa PayWave transactions is growing steadily in Brunei and cardholders will find that it makes everyday transactions faster and easier for consumers,” said Ooi Huey Tyng, Visa Country Manager for Singapore and Brunei.

“It is just as secure as any other Visa card, we believe that Visa payWave will help in the displacement of cash in the market, particularly for small ticket purchases and drive Brunei towards become a cashless society,” she added.

In terms of security, BIBD Visa credit cards come with a comprehensive Takaful coverage and emergency services worldwide supported by Visa, including emergency card replacements and cash disbursement services.

Online shoppers are also protected from unauthorised usage with the 3D secure and verified system by Visa Technology.
