AROUND 1,200 students yesterday headed to the Orchid Garden Hotel to check out the 7th Edition of the Education Malaysia Open Day co-organised by Rexpocentral Sdn Bhd and Paradigm Scholar Agency (PSA) Brunei.

Representatives from 30 Malaysian universities are participating at the event to assist students at the education fair.

Ahmad Rezal Chan, the Senior Partner of Rexpocentral Sdn Bhd, explained to the Sunday Bulletin that the universities present at the event comprise of those from the government as well as private university institutions, with courses offered ranging from Diploma to PhD programmes.

“Essentially, the universities are here to meet Bruneians who are interested in studying abroad, mainly in Malaysia. It is gaining popularity because it is affordable to go to Malaysia, and the ringgit is depreciating by about 20 per cent, which means that you get 20 per cent savings whenever you go to Malaysia,” he added.

The event organiser added that the programmes offered comprise both local Malaysian degrees, as well as international degrees from the United Kingdom, Australia or the United States.

Proximity is also a reason to study in Malaysia as it is nearby, so it will be comfortable for parents to send their children to Malaysia. It can be an ideal destination as a ‘training ground’ for a year or two as students have the option to transfer to the UK after completing the two years in Malaysia, he explained.

“So it’s a flexible kind of arrangement, with the proximity bringing a sense of assurance and security to parents,” stated the event organiser. “With Malaysia, there are airline options that fly daily between Brunei and Malaysia, or parents can also crossover easily to visit if their children are studying in Miri,” he added.

In terms of education quality, Ahmad Rezal noted that there are branch campuses in Malaysia such as Nottingham University in Kuala Lumpur, as well as Australian branch universities like Curtin University, Swinburne University, and Monash University.

As part of the Education Malaysia Open Day, the event organisers are also offering incentives to encourage students in the form of free flight tickets for students who have applied to selected universities during the exhibition period.

The open day began on February 19 at Pusat Insani in Seria, and continues at the Orchid Garden Hotel in Anggerek Desa from February 20 to 21 from 2pm to 8pm.
