IN CONJUNCTION with the 55th National Day and the 25th Liberation Day of Kuwait, Dr Fahad Mashary Al-Thafiri, Ambassador of Kuwait to Brunei Darussalam, delivered a message to Bruneian people as well as Kuwaitis residing in Brunei.

The guest of honour was Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, Minister of Education.

The event commenced with singing of the national anthems of Brunei and Kuwait, and was followed by a cake cutting ceremony, presentation of a souvenir to the guest of honour and a speech by the ambassador.

In his speech, he highlighted Kuwait’s foreign policy “based on humanitarian assistance to all needy countries regardless of their geographical location religious belief or ethnic origins”.

Following the invasion of Kuwait in 1990, seeing the people suffer as a result has made “the country more aware and always alert to the suffering of other countries”, he said.

In turn, Kuwait prides itself as being an emerging international base for humanitarian organisations and will continue to make significant “contributions to humanitarian activities in its region and beyond”, said the ambassador.

Kuwait has made a total of $1.6 billion in contributions to conferences it hosted for Syria in 2013, 2014 and 2015 in the United Kingdom.

Kuwait has also provided consistent support to the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development by “assisting developing nations to reach their goals and improve their standard of living”, he explained.

The ambassador also spoke about the steady progress of Kuwaiti-Bruneian bilateral relations, highlighting His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s official state visit to Kuwait in May 2015 as part of a “new phase of concrete efforts to support cooperation in various fields”.

His Majesty and His Highness the Amir of Kuwait held talks to help increase cooperation in all fields that would benefit both countries and their peoples.

Others topics of discussion among the leaders were regional and global issues of mutual concern relating to the Islamic world, said the Ambassador.
