PROMOTION opportunities within the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) are within the grasp of those who satisfy a certain number of criteria set forth by the country’s military which, among others, include its personnel’s capability to meet expectations.
In an interview with Commander of Personnel under the Ministry of Defence yesterday, Colonel Haji Abdul Hadi explained that apart from being physically able as determined by assessments and attending mandatory courses in line with a specific rank, “they should be able to perform to the highest standards of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces,” along with high standards of discipline.
On the sidelines of an insignia presentation ceremony to mark the promotion of 17 personnel that was held at the Bolkiah Garrison Officers’ Mess, the commander explained that once assessments are made and recommendations forwarded, a decision will be made by the RBAF Executive Committee, to be followed by another round of recommendations for the final selection.
“There aren’t necessarily any limits,” to the number of promotions, “depending on the recommendation and the requirement of that particular establishment,” with reference to either the Royal Brunei Land Force, Royal Brunei Air Force or the Royal Brunei Navy and also the RBAF as a whole.

“Other ranks will also go through the same process where their own executive board will discuss career profession of their respective personnel,” added the commander, and elaborated that such opportunities are also dependent on the fulfilment of certain criteria.
“This is based on the hope that we can ensure personnel at the right place and at the right time,” as per the continuous development of the RBAF.
As part of ongoing efforts to recognise, reward and groom officers who have performed well and have demonstrated potential to contribute further to the RBAF, the promotion ceremony yesterday was attended by the First Admiral (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Abdul Aziz bin Haji Mohd Tamit, the Deputy Minister of Defence, other senior officials and the promoted officer’s families.
