THE 12th session of the Legislative Council (LegCo) Meeting will be officially opened at the Department of Councils of State on Saturday, March 5.
As it was announced in a LegCo press release yesterday, the official opening will be officiated by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
Like previous years, following the opening, the LegCo session will start the day after the official opening or at a date to be announced by the Speaker of the Legislative Council, YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib.
The meeting will be chaired by the LegCo Speaker, who will be assisted by Clerk I to the LegCo, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Jaya Dato Paduka Haji Judin bin Haji Asar and Deputy Clerk to the LegCo, Rose Aminah binti Haji Ismail. Typically, sessions run from 9am to 12 noon and again from 2pm to 4.30pm.
The sessions will be open to the public, while government and private schools as well as other educational institutions who wish to give their students exposure to the guidelines on discussing bills in Brunei are also welcome.
Schools wishing to conduct a study visit to the LegCo meeting can do so by writing a letter at least a week before the intended date of the visit to: Jurutulis Majlis-Majlis Mesyuarat, Jabatan Majlis-Majlis Mesyuarat, Dewan Majlis, Jalan Dewan Majlis, Bandar Seri Begawan BB 3910, Brunei Darussalam.
In line with this, anyone who wishes to attend the LegCo sessions is required to abide by a dress code.
Men are required to wear a long sleeve shirt with a neck tie and ‘Songkok’, an MIB shirt or Malay traditional attire with a ‘Sinjang’ and ‘Songkok’. Women are required to wear ‘Baju Kurung’ and a head scarf. Additionally, a lounge suit can also be used.
Students should wear their respective school uniforms, while undergradutes should dress smart with long sleeves for men and Baju Kurong and head scarves for women.
Caps, short sleeves, T-shirts, sports shirts, jeans, shorts, sport shorts, short skirts, leggings, sandals and slippers are prohibited.

This marks the 12th year since the Legislative Council Meeting first convened, and over the years it has seen a number of issues and questions discussed for the benefit and welfare of the people in this country.
The conference is significant for Brunei Darussalam, and is part of the government’s efforts to provide its citizens a forum in which to sit down, speak up and discuss views and opinions in a healthy way towards determining the fate of the people and the country’s development.
