AN ESTIMATED 800 workshops, providing assorted services, were recorded by the Land Transport Department (JPD), resulting from surveys conducted in July and August this year. Around 37 workshops are located near national housing areas, while only 73 workshops are approved by JPD.

This particular piece of information was shared by the Director of Land Transport, Dr Haji Supry bin Haji Ladi, during a dialogue session yesterday, with motor workshop operators. The session was held in the Amar Pahlawan Hall, at the Ministry of Communications.

Among the topics highlighted included certification requirements for workshop authorisation; regulations for selling and installing auto parts; and the importance of authorised workshops as a road safety measure.

According to the director, proper authorisation ensures that all operators and mechanics are suitably qualified to repair motor vehicles. In addition, it provides an incentive to graduates who are seeking to establish themselves in auto mechanic careers.

The director also listed a number of general violations which fall into two categories, namely Category A and Category B. Among the offences in Category A are: failing to show proper certification, suppressing information from customers, and failing to report unclaimed vehicles to the JPD.

Meanwhile, offences in Category B include: falsified certification, unsanitary working conditions, failing to comply with safety procedures, hiring unauthorised workers, and lack of concern for the well-being of employees and customers.

One of the basic aims of yesterday’s dialogue session was to provide information to all motor workshop operators, including retailers of spare parts and accessories. Additionally, the session served as a medium for obtaining necessary data on all workshops and spare part dealers in the country.

Also present at the talk were Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud, the Deputy Director of Land Transport; heads of departments; and senior officials from JPD and the Municipal Department.
