THE steady increase of breast cancer patients and survivors has opened the need for aesthetic products that address the issues of self-esteem and self-confidence related to the loss that breast cancer survivors have come to know.

As part of her health campaign to ensure that local cancer survivors are given another chance at living a relatively normal life especially when they re-integrate back into society, Lili Yong of Lilli Lingerie has introduced a line of prosthetics and accompanying female undergarments specifically catered to empowering breast cancer survivors.

In an interview with the Bulletin yesterday on the sidelines of a presentation by German lingerie maker Anita, Yong explained the move behind the introduction stating that women of varying ages who have undergone mastectomies have voiced the need for such products especially after the life-altering procedure that requires the amputation of one or both breasts.

“What we want to be is a channel for these women especially since the list is growing against dwindling supplies,” she explained.

The German brand, she said, was chosen based on its intimate, personal and top-of-the-line nature that emphasises on hand-made products especially fitted for each individual client, making their line of prosthetics and undergarments comfortable for users.

“Most of these women have to wait months before being fitted for prosthetics following their surgeries and when they finally receive them, these prosthetics don’t fit well and to an extent it affects their health especially their spine, which is why it is important to ensure that they are provided with the best after-surgery attention,” explained Yong.

With the consideration that the government is the main healthcare provider, Yong expressed interest to partner with the relevant government department in facilitating survivors’ emotional and mental recovery especially in terms of helping women feel the way they should about their physique.

These products from Anita, including a range of other lingerie to cater to pregnant women as well as sports enthusiasts aimed at providing the right back and breast support to these different markets are currently on display at Yong’s boutique in Kiulap.

Cancer survivors are encouraged to come in for a fitting and discuss the variety of options that are being made available to them at affordable prices ranging between BND200 and BND400 for custom-made prosthetics.
