STUDENTS of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) showcased their filmmaking talents during a public screening at the Language and Literature Bureau last night.
The screening was part of the 6th Literature Festival organised by UBD and is scheduled to officially open today.
Fifteen short films were screened during the event. Haji Muhammad Sawaz bin Haji Awang Ali and Siti Nur Izzati binti Haji Rosmali, student committee members of the 6th Literature Festival, said the short films were part of the students’ module and contributed towards their marks.
Zefri Ariff, a UBD lecturer, said the filmmaking is part of the students’ GenNEXT programme.

In the filmmaking exercise, he said it was based on three pillars: leadership; entrepreneurship; and innovation.
After reviewing the films, the UBD lecturer believed that the art of filmmaking has a high potential in Brunei, given the creativity of the young generation.
He was satisfied that some of the short films that were made by the students can be brought to regional film festivals, which will promote the Sultanate for the filmmaking industry.
Ariff said that students were encouraged to explore their own genres and use their own innovation.
The students also went through the standard systematic approach to filmmaking from ideas to script-making, including adequate referencing of their content.
He added that although the films are only five to six minutes in length, it had given the students valuable hands-on experience in exploring their talents.
