FOURTY-FOUR Civil Engineering students, lecturers and staff from Politeknik Brunei School of Science and Engineering Lumut Campus recently visited the Lugu housing construction site in Mukim Sengkurong as part of curriculum activities.
The visit aimed to enhance the knowledge of the first year students by showing them a real-life scenario of construction works of cluster-type housing units, according to a press release.
They were briefed by contractors and officers of the Housing Development Department, Ministry of Development, on the construction methods, design aspects, sub-structure and superstructure processes as well as material usage for the construction of the 1,000 cluster-type housing units.
One Project Engineer of the Housing Development Department highlighted that the contractor has used aluminium formwork as an innovative method to do on-site concreting work.

This has allowed safer, better quality and a faster method of casting the concrete panel as it is lighter and durable and can be used repeatedly for a minimum of 500 times compared to the conventional timber formwork, he said.
The visit also aimed to provide students with the opportunity to relate what they have learnt in their Construction Technology module offered under Politeknik Brunei’s Civil Engineering Level 5 Diploma programme.
The three-year programme, which has been introduced under the School of Science and Engineering at the Politeknik Brunei Lumut Campus, is inclusive of a six-month internship.
