THE Brunei Council on Social Welfare or Majlis Kesejahteraan Masyarakat (MKM) started its distribution of cooked packed meals to 62 families, to run every day from June 8 – 17.
The non-government organisation, whose main objectives include addressing the social welfare of vulnerable groups, has distributed 356 packed meals and is expected to be distributing 3,650 packs over the span of 10 days.
“Some of the recipients are single mothers with children and some are without assistance. There are also underprivileged families who just don’t have enough money to put food on the table for their children. So we are here hoping to help ease their burden,” said MKM Secretary Hamidah Lakem.
This is the third consecutive year that MKM is carrying out the activity and it also marks the largest number of meals to be distributed compared to previous years that stood at just more than 200 packed meals per day.
The selected recipients who stay in the Brunei-Muara District are identified through the MKM Legal Clinic Registered Clients.

Aisah, one of the recipients of the meals, conveyed her gratitude to MKM for the food. The divorcee has seven children to feed and does not have a stable job to support her children who are still in school.
“The project has really helped ease the burden of my family and I hope that they can continue on this project,” she said.
Hamidah Lakem also revealed that MKM will be heading to Miri to spread some cheer to children at the Rumah Anak Anak Kesayangan Kami on June 19, and host a Sungkai dinner with underprivileged families on June 21.
Other MKM projects include the monthly distribution of food to 34 underprivileged families and the weekly legal clinic services.
